The Complete Ceremony Kit — Chawan, Whisk, Holder & Scoop
The version with the bowl.
Our Ritual Kit leaves the bowl out on purpose, because most people already own something wide enough and it keeps the price down. This is for everyone else: the person who wants the proper vessel, and the person buying this as a gift, where "use a cereal bowl" is not the note you want to include.
What's in the kit
- Ceramic tea bowl (chawan) with a pouring spout. The spout is the part you'll appreciate. It turns pouring a latte from a careful operation into a normal one.
- Bamboo whisk (chasen). For building a fine, even foam.
- Bamboo whisk holder. Dries the whisk on its curve so the prongs keep their shape. This is what makes a chasen last a year instead of a month.
- Bamboo scoop and measure. For getting the ratio right without guessing.
All bamboo and pottery, finished with vegetable oil rather than varnish or synthetic coatings. It arrives in patterned gift packaging, which is why most people who buy this one aren't buying it for themselves.
What you can make with it
Usucha. Thin matcha, the everyday bowl. About 2 oz of water to two scoops.
Koicha. Thick matcha, closer to four scoops in the same water. Syrupy and intense, worth trying once you have good powder.
Matcha latte. Whisk usucha, then pour over ice and milk. The spout is what makes this clean.
How to use it
- Sift 1 to 2 scoops of matcha into the bowl.
- Add about 2 oz of water at roughly 175°F. Just off the boil, then wait a minute. Boiling water scorches matcha and turns it bitter.
- Whisk briskly in a W motion, not a circle, for 15 to 20 seconds.
- Drink as is, or pour over ice and milk.
- Rinse the whisk in warm water, no soap, and set it on the holder.
Care
Hand wash the bamboo, always. Don't let it soak, and never use the dishwasher. The bowl is more forgiving but we'd wash that by hand too.
If it arrives broken
Ceramic travels well until it doesn't. Send us a photo within 7 days and we'll ship a replacement free. You won't need to return the broken one, and you won't need to argue with us about it.
Shipping
Ships from a US warehouse. Most orders arrive within 2 to 5 business days.
A note on the tea
Matcha powder is not included in this kit. Good matcha is perishable and varies a lot by harvest, so it is worth buying fresh in small tins rather than in bulk. Our guide to choosing matcha covers grade, harvest dates, colour and storage in about two minutes.
