Whisks wear out. This is the one you buy when yours does.

A chasen is a consumable, and nobody tells you that when you buy your first one. The prongs are split bamboo, so they soften, splay, and eventually snap. With daily use you'll get somewhere between six months and a year out of one. That isn't a defect, it's the tool doing its job.

So: a single, handcrafted bamboo whisk, about 6 inches, with a longer and slimmer handle than most.

Why the long handle

Standard chasen are built for a wide, shallow tea bowl. If you're whisking straight into a mug, a travel tumbler, or a tall glass, which is what most people actually do on a weekday, a standard handle puts your knuckles in the drink. This one doesn't.

Who this is for

  • Your first whisk has gone soft and stopped foaming properly.
  • You already own a bowl and a scoop and just need the whisk.
  • You want a second one for the office, or for travel.
  • You want to try matcha without committing to a full kit.

If you're starting from nothing, the Ritual Kit at $59 is better value, since it adds the sifter, scoop, and spoon for $20 more.

Making it last

Rinse in warm water immediately after use. No soap, ever, because it strips the bamboo and taints the next cup. Don't let it soak, don't put it in the dishwasher, and stand it upright to dry rather than laying it on its side. Bamboo left wet and flat is what turns a year long whisk into a two week one.

Before its first use, soak the prongs in warm water for about two minutes. It softens them enough that they won't snap on the first vigorous whisk.
